Glendale

One of the largest cities in Los Angeles County, Glendale rises where the San Gabriel and San Fernando valleys meet.

Incorporated in 1906, Glendale had just 14,000 residents in 1920—today, that population has grown to an astounding 192,000.

Why? Many are attracted there because of the city’s dynamic mix of longterm residents and new arrivals (Glendale, in fact, has one of the largest Armenian communities in the United States),  business opportunities and exciting connections to the entertainment industry past and present.

The city has always been very aware of its growth and how population increases usually affect cities for the worse and not the better—Glendale, however, has sought to preserve its past alongisde its present with a highly activie community effort, the Committee for a Clean & Beautiful Glendale.

The Bob’s Big Boy hamburger chain got its start here (back in 1936); so did Baskin-Robbins “31 Flavors” ice cream chain (in 1945). Today the city’s biggest shopping destinations are redeveloped sections of Brand Ave, the Glendale Galleria and a recent addition, Americana at Brand, which was designed by Rick Caruso, the same person who designed and built the popular entertainment/shopping center in Los Angeles, The Grove..

There are 29 schools in the Glendale Unified School District, but also many private schools such as Chamlian Armenian School, Holy Family High School and, for higher education needs, Glendale Community College.  Residents are also served by several hospitals, including Glendale Adventist Medical Center and Glendale Memorial Medical Center.

The city’s south and southwestern sections of the city are more densely populated than those in the north, which is where you’ll find more exclusive neighborhoods and developed communities. The median house or condo value in 2009 averaged around $586,000 while the median household income in that same year was about $51,000.

In the entertainment industry, big names like the Walt Disney Company and Dreamworks Animation have a sizable presence in Glendale—so does Forest Lawn Memorial Park, which opened in 1917 and is the place where many genuine members of Hollywood royalty have been laid to rest over the years.
