Parts of Ontario today may still have dairy and other farms, and this may cause visitors to think it’s the same little agricultural community that it was 130 years ago, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Located in southwest San Bernardino County, Ontario is a thriving city of about 163,000 and home to a variety of businesses and operations vital to Southern California. These include Ontario International Airport, a major travel hub serving more than six million passengers each year; the Ontario Convention Center; and the enormous shopping and entertainment complex, Ontario Mills. Plans are underway to continue developing even more mixed-used areas of residences, business parks and town centers.
And yet, in spite of the hustle and bustle, peace and quiet are not far away. Long regarded as a gateway to the San Bernardino Mountains, Ontario is situated within easy reach of such popular mountain resort locations as Wrightwood (35 minutes away), Lake Arrowhead (45 minutes) and Big Bear Lake (one hour).
According to 2009 statistics, the city’s estimated median house/condo value was $267,900. Though this number was below the statewide average in the same year (about $384,000), it demonstrated an incredible increase in Ontario's real estate values since 2000 (at that time, the median house/condo value had been only $136,000). According to census figures, the estimated median income of households in the city is about $53,000.
31 public schools serve Ontario students, including schools in the Mountain View and Ontario-Montclair school districts and the Chaffey Joint Union High School District. (For a taste of history, consider this: The 340 acres occupied by Chaffey High School were set aside for educational purposes long ago, in the 1880s, by the Chaffey brothers, early pioneers to the area, who donated acreage to the University of Southern California to create an agricultural college.)
Ontario Mills is the area's flagship entertainment spot, providing Ontario residents and visitors from surrounding cities with a fun, interesting night-life and shopping destination. But that's not the only one. Another recent addition that has raised the community’s profile as an entertainment hotspot is Citizens Business Bank Arena.
Opened in 2008, this 11,000-seat, state-of-the-art venue, located adjacent to Piedmonte at Ontario Center, is a multipurpose center hosting concert and sporting events. Calling the arena home are the Ontario Reign, a hockey team affiliated with the Los Angeles Kings, and the Ontario Warriors of American Indoor Football. Ontario Ca 91761 homes for sale.
